This is quite some way beyond the experience of a primary loss, such as the death of a loved one, and one which lingers as a result of changes in relationships, schools, family finances, and lifestyle.
Although grief itself holds many forms, it is this secondary loss - the "what ifs?" that can sneak up and catch you when you least expect it. That's why it is important to have someone to talk to, or a strategy to cope when these grief-bombs hit. This is why they say grief never leaves you, but simply evolves & adapts to become part of the 'new you' and your everyday life.
