With the after-effects of the global pandemic still in play, many people are currently struggling with everyday living costs, high inflation, employment, and general financial stress.
The economy has been in a huge state of flux since 2020, and much uncertainty remains. With an increase in the rates of people working from home, wage rises, and e-commerce, many small businesses have been forced to close due to online competition, lower foot traffic, and higher wage costs—often leading to redundancy and low rates of re-employment.
For most households, disposable income is low, which has a huge impact on the wheels that need to turn to keep the doors of many bricks-and-mortar shops open.
Financial loss profoundly impacts individuals and families, affecting many layers of life. Mental health is of critical concern to many, as families struggle to pay bills and make ends meet. Anxiety and depression from financial insecurity can be debilitating, leading to sleepless nights and strained family relationships. Children in financially stressed households may experience emotional distress, academic difficulties, and social isolation. There is often social loss and sacrifice of opportunities in extracurricular activities, which can lead to a sense of missing out.
Quite frankly, times are tough. Given these profound impacts, it is important to seek support when you need it. Financial advisors, mental health professionals, and support networks can offer guidance and emotional aid. Community resources, such as food banks and housing assistance programmes, can alleviate immediate pressures.
Seeking support is a sign of strength. Recognising that financial struggles are common can help reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about money and mental health. No one should face financial hardship alone; support systems are essential for recovery and resilience.
